Sadako's involvement in Starfleet was the result of an accident. The day before her brother Takaguchi was to leave for his new duties as an officer, a team of Romulan terrorists attacked them. Although her brother got free of the snare, the Romulans strapped her to a transporter and beamed her far away....

But the Romulans made a major mistake - instead of beaming her to their intended destination, she landed in the Science laboratory of Pasteur Station (DS21)! The people of Pasteur Station wondered how she had beamed there. When she told them her story, and how she longed to be with her brother again (after all, he was the only one left to carry on the Hidewara name!), they arranged for her to leave with the next starship that arrived.

The day before the next starship, the USS Eagle, arrived, she thought about what life would be like on an actual starship - and one of the Medical officers picked it up! She was then taken to the Counselor's office for a neurophysiological examination, and they discovered that she was both telepathic and empathic.

Someone then ran into the room and said that the Eagle had a Counselor position open. Sadako wanted to make herself useful while she was aboard the ship, so she readily volunteered to accept the position.
