"Nightmares, Part II" a joint log by Lieutenant Junior Grade Jansug Idrys and Lieutenant Joe Castillo Jansug Idrys sat in his office going over the usual dull stack of PADDs and wishing like Hell he had an assistant to help him out of this mess. He'd have to talk to the Captain about that, but doing so was impossible at the moment. He sighed inwardly and wished Lwax were here as she'd get things whipped into shape quickly. Joe was on his way to Sickbay for his appointment with the Counselor. He wasn't thrilled about it. It wasn't the perfect end to the perfect day. Getting shot at, having his crewmates shot at and injured, he really felt like canceling the appointment but he prided himself on being a man of his word so he found himself outside the Counselor's office even though he really was disinclined to be there. He rang the chime. Idrys looked up. "Come in." He wondered who it could be, then saw Joe Castillo in the doorway. "Come right on in, Joe, have a seat." He smiled. Joe flashed a smile at the Counselor and walked in heading straight for the chair. "Thank you, Counselor, I'm glad this day is finally over and we're both here to keep this appointment." Idrys nodded. "So tell me, Joe ... are you having any more of those recurring dreams?" He didn't want to say "nightmares" but he had a feeling this was why Joe had come. He hoped to make some significant progress. Joe looked Jansug straight in the eyes then sighed heavily. "Yes, I had another one last night." Idrys nodded and began tapping on a PADD. "Can you recall what happened?" "Well, it wasn't just one, I had several. I can't remember all of them." "Several ... well, can you remember any in particular? Anything leave a very strong impression?" Joe sighed again and thought for a while. "There was one. It involved Dr. Crusher, some Romulans and I. We were on an away mission and we ran into them. We tried to reason with them but they became hostile." "Romulans ... let's see, as I recall, last time you mentioned Lt. Kaelyre and the Jem'Hadar. Another hostile situation. How long did it take before they turned on you?" "Well, we were talking for a few minutes. We introduced ourselves, they introduced themselves, we were finding out what we were both up to, when some of them came up behind us, took out some of my Security detail and made a break for it." "Entirely unprovoked? I wonder why." "I don't know. I turned around to see what had happened and then I was knocked out cold. When I came around I saw three Security guards dead and Lt. Crusher missing. I guess they left me for dead. Someone in their party must have been badly hurt because they left a bloody trail that was pretty easy to follow." Idrys nodded quietly and made notes. This was a tough nut to crack all right. The pieces of the puzzle just weren't fitting together correctly. "So let's see what we have so far .... meeting with the Romulans ... exchanging info ... suddenly they turn hostile ... no explanation ... guards killed ... Crusher missing ... a trail of blood." Joe nodded. Idrys looked up and then off to the side, tapping his chin. "I can't quite figure this out. Go on with what happened next." He frowned, trying to find some meaning in all of this. "I followed the trail of blood, and it seems my team gave about as good a fight as it got. There were only two Romulans left and one was badly hurt. They must have really thought they had killed me because they were truly surprised to see me. They had Lt. Crusher tied up and were threatening her with kalehs when I arrived. 'Let her go,' I said to them, but they just laughed at me and the one that wasn't hurt replied, 'Or you'll do what?' I told them if they hurt her they wouldn't live to regret it. The one that wasn't injured laughed at me again. 'OK, hevamsu,' he said, 'I'll make you a deal ... if you can beat me in a kaleh duel I'll let you and your friend live. I admire your tenacity and for that I'll give you a chance at your life'." "Then what happened?" Idrys had to fight the urge to go to the replicator and order popcorn, which is precisely what Lwaxana would have done in this situation. "I had no other choice but to accept given the circumstances. The injured one that was now positioned next to Sara, I mean Doctor Crusher, threw his kaleh at me, just barely missing impaling my foot with it. I picked it up, and the duel began. I didn't fare too badly at first. I learned to use the kaleh in a club I joined while at the Academy. It was a group of us that were fascinated by all types of blades. It wasn't an Academy-sponsored club as I'm sure they wouldn't be too thrilled at the idea of their Cadets running each other through the chests with blades. Nonetheless it was my only pastime besides my studies and one of the blades we used was the kaleh. I cut the Romulan a few times and he cut me as well. Neither one of us received serious wounds but we were both bleeding from several places. 'You fight well with the kaleh for being hevamsu,' he jeered at me to try and break my concentration but I ignored it." "And did either of you gain an advantage after that?" This is getting so strange, Idrys thought. Joe sighed heavily again, the weight of having to repeat this tale was taking its toll on him. "The combination of the blood I was losing and the blow to the head I had suffered eventually got the better of me. I lost my footing and fell and before I could regain it he was on top of me and had his kaleh to my throat and was laughing maniacally. 'You fought well, hevamsu, but not good enough.' He forced me to turn my head towards where Sara was being held and his partner had from God knows where taken out another kaleh and then slit her throat. I screamed in anguish, pain and anger but it was short lived as he began to cut mine but just after he first pierced my skin I woke up in a cold sweat." Idrys shook his head. "I have no idea where this is leading. What do you make of it, Joe?" Joe shook his head and then put it in his hands. "I don't know, Doc, I just don't know; what I do know is I can't go on like this. It's starting to affect my work. If I can't get to making it through a night without a nightmare it'll start to slow me down. I won't react as fast in certain situations and in my line of work that means people might die. I just can't afford that." Idrys nodded. "Well, I do have some medicine here that I believe will be of help." He handed a vial to Joe. "Just take one before bedtime and I think it ought to help calm you. Let me know if anything else happens, all right?" Joe looked up at Jansug and the anguish was plain in his face. "Isn't there something else you can do for me, Doc? I feel like I'm falling apart. What's wrong with me?" "I don't know. We'll have to find out. But, Joe ... I don't think you're crazy or falling apart. I think you're doing the right thing, coming to see me and trying to work things out. This is good for you, as you'll see in the end. Trust me on this." "OK Doc, you're the expert. When should I see you again?" "Try in another week." He rose and shook Joe's hand and watched him walk out, then sat down at his desk. He grinned, and quietly hummed, "What a difference a placebo makes ..." He also knew that, once one used the lavatory after ingesting methylyne blue, unless one happened to be Bolian or Andorian, one would have a very strange reaction indeed on seeing one's urine turning blue ... although the drug itself was completely harmless.
