Hi Jim,
Exchanging my set for your fixed set sounds great. Let me know when you need my
set.
Thanks,
Dan

Hi Dan,
Yes, I’m afraid the chess sets issued by Hadley Institute were sadly lacking
in quality control. I have two possible solutions. One will cost some money,
the other will only cost some time.
For about $70, you can obtain a very nice chess set from www.chessbaron.com.
The gentleman who runs the site is named Baron Turner. The USBCA purchased
several sets from him last July for the Florida School for Deaf and Blind
Children. You would have the choice of either a ten-inch or thirteen-inch
board. The USBCA actually gave one of these sets away in a drawing at our
national tournament. We were quite pleased with the quality of the set.
The second solution is, I will send you a Hadley set, modified to eliminate
the problem of wobbling, toppling pieces. I am currently in the process of
modifying a set for a fellow whose set was lost in a house fire. When i’ve
finished that one, I’m modifying a set for a woman in Dallas who lost her set
when a tornado destroyed her residence. If you’re willing to wait, it will
probably be several weeks at least before I can complete these sets, I would
be willing to send you a modified set in exchange for your set. If this is of
interst, keep in touch, and I will let you know when I’m nearing completion
of what would become your set.
Best wishes,
Jim T

Subject: [usbca_chess] Hadley chess set, some pieces don’t fit
Hi,
I have a chess set from Hadley. It's about ten years old. There has never
been a snug fit between some of the board's holes and some of the pieces. In
some cases, the holes are too big -- no piece fits snugly. In other cases,
the base of some pieces are too small -- these pieces don't fit snugly into
any hole.
I haven't tried filling in the "too large" holes. I've tried wrapping tape
around the base of the "too small" pieces, but the tape doesn't stick for
very long.
Any suggestions on how to fix this problem would be appreciated. It's one of
the main reasons I keep losing interest in chess.
Thanks,
Dan
