The Saturday Tournaments here at the Rochester Chess Center in Rochester, NY
are always G/60.  I guess the TD could look at how many moves have been
played, and then apply some proportional arithmetic to give each player what
would seem to be fair.  However, the problem is, that if the tournaments run
late I miss the handicapped transit vehicle home.    Plus the tournament is
always late because the TD has to wait on Mr. Grandmaster who never shows up
on time.  They always wait about fifteen minutes to allow johnnie-come-lates
to sign up, as well.  Real world problems prevent this kind of solution.



I played in the USCC for the Blind in WV some years ago, and finished
second.  It turns out that the winner of that game would have been the first
deaf—blind champion, since we were both deaf-blind.  I enjoyed the
tournament, and meeting some people, but I felt it was unfair that I was the
only person in the whole trounament to play against two masters.  One of the
Masters felt that he had a bit too much sight to be fairly involved in the
tournament and withdrew after the second game.  I believe you were the TD
for that tournament.  I do not blame you for the pairings, because no matter
what the tournament would have come down to that game.



And I will be 63 in 2023.



I would like to propose a small rule change if there is any possibility of
pushing it into the rule book.  Use Phonetic Spelling instead of letters.
Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Foxtrot, Gulf and Hotel.  One of the
best players here in Rochester is from Jamaica, and he says “Ehh-4 meaning
“E4” and the like,”  which sounds a lot like A4 to me.  The phonetic letters
I am suggesting here are from the Ham Radio tradition, and are required
memorization for a Ham Radio licence.  There were a couple ot times during
that tournament when the observer made corrections when I misunderstood my
opponent.

Hi Patricdk,

To my knowledge, Only one of the players who is regular in the ftp-chess
tournaments is sighted. And, quite honestly, I’ve had more occasion to
encounter mismatched positions when playing against blind players. However,
the protocols we use, requiring each player to repeat the move being stated,
generally keeps this sort of thing down to a minimum. Also, I believe, at
least in USCF-sponsored tournaments, that the TD is expected to adjust
clocks based on how far back the position is reset. For example, if you have
60 minutes to make 30 moves, and on move 25 conflicting positions occur,
then the TD resets the boards based on scoresheets to the point where the
positions match. Let’s say this occurs on move 20. A bit of arithmetic is
required to calculate that 20 is 80 percent of 25. Therefore, the clocks
should be adjusted to 80 percent of what was previously showing. So, if you
had five minutes showing on your clock, that would mean you used 55 minutes.
80 percent of 55 is 44, so 11 minutes should be put back on your clock. At
least, that’s how it is supposed to work in the US.



Meanwhile, I will turn 73 in 2023. It is my hope I will still be an active
player. I will look forward to meeting you!

So sighted players will be playing with the blind players in the same
tournament?  I do not mind that, but it helps to be clear.  I have not been
on this list in almost ten years, so I need help understanding how you
wouldrun this tournament?  As soon as my ICCF account gets re-activated, I
am planning to sign up for a Rated Group double round-robin of four players
that Alex Dunne run from the USChess page.



ATM, I am currently more interested in playing correspondence chess rather
than OTB.  Too many bad experiences in OTB with sighted players have
basically driven me away from the format.  I announce “Mate!”, and the reply
is, “Oh, my King is on E1, not F1.”   And the TD is called in, and he backs
the game up to the point where the King made his move, and of course, all
the other games are waiting on our game, so he gives each of us five minutes
to play, and the sighted player can see the board and its possibilities
immediately, whereas I have to feel out the position all over again.



I might come to the U.S. Blind Chess championship in 2023, but I will be in
solitary meditation retreat until December, 2022.  In my little cave here.

Skype_chess is a List, pretty much the same as usbca_chess, ftp-chess,
blind-chess, TournoiSkype, and probably a bunch more I am unaware of.
Incidentally, I included the capitals in tournoiskype simply to enhance
screenreader pronunciation. Most of those Lists are particularly for blind
chessplayers, but at least skype_chess, TournoiSkype and ftp-chess will
allow sighted players to participate as well.

I’ll be directing the next FTP-Chess Tournament. And, since skype_chess and
usbca_chess are both running swiss-style tourmanents, I’m going to do
something a little different.



I tried this last year, and it worked pretty well. It’s a Group Round Robin.



Johannes has posted the ratings from the recently concluded FTP-Chess
Tournament; I’ll use those ratings to form my groups. Each group will have
an even number of players, so I won’t have to issue a buy each round. So,
the number of rounds will depend on the number of entrants. If need be, I
will have to drop the last couple entries in order to form an even number of
participants per round. I’d love to get at least 24 players. That would give
us a five-round tournament with six players in each group.



But, we’ll play it by ear, as they say. Counting the nine people in the
“Permanent” List, kept by our fearless moderator, I have eleven confirmed so
far. In a day or two, I’ll post a status on entries to keep you up to date.



Time control will, of course, be 30 moves in 60 minutes, with an additional
hour added to each player as the game progresses through controls.



Any questions, feel free to email me directly. I’ll post the question and
answer to the list if appropriate.
