Well, I’ve thought about it, but while I don’t mind playing stronger players,
at least players somewhat stronger than myself, I just can’t see myself
enjoying being crushed like a bug. I’ve had it happen a time or two, and it’s
not fun for me.

Subject: [usbca_chess] A Remarkable Opportunity

Hello List Memberse,

Have you ever played chess against a bona fide Grandmaster? Have you ever
wondered what it would be like? Is there anything I can say that might tempt
you toward that end? (Smile)

Believe it or not, a Grandmaster moves chess pieces just like any other
mortal...one piece at a time. They just do it with a bit more rhyme and reason
than the rest of us. You have a remarkable opportunity to experience playing a
chess game against a Grandmaster. You would need a Skype account, and you would
need to register with Olivier Deville’s List so as to gain access to his
chatroom. Both of those requirements are free. The only thing you might have to
pay would be for the microphone for your computer if you don’t already have
one. So what’s this all about?

Several times a year, A Grandmaster named Bogdan Lalik gives of his time to
play a Simultaneous Exhibition against all comers. All you have to do to
participate is to show up in Salon1, the chatroom run by Olivier Deville. I
participated in the last one he gave, and it was quite interesting. And,yes, I
got thunped!

For those who don’t know, in a Simultaneous Exhibition, the host plays
simultaneously a game of chess against each of the participants. In this case,
for example, GM Lalik played 20 of us at the same time. He makes a move on
Board 1 and moves on to Board 2, then Board 3, and so on, round and round,
until he completes all of the games. Your requirement is that you must make
your move by the time he gets back to your board. In the early going, before
participants begin resigning, that actually gives one a fair amount of time to
consider the move.

If this is of any interest to you, contact Olivier directly. See the message
below.
