Reason I couldn't find a config.log was I used a build script this time, which 
uses the following configure options:

    ./configure \
        --prefix=/usr \
        --sysconfdir=/etc \
        --localstatedir=/var \
        --with-x \
        --with-sdl \
        --with-sdl-sound \
        --with-sdl-gfx \
        --enable-bsdsock-new \
        --enable-jit \
        --with-alsa
