Yes, you need automake 1.7 or newer.
This has been a requirement for a couple of years now.

You got me. This is just one example of why I'd like to ditch autotools.
You can download the source (it'll be on the GNU site somewhere) and build it
yourself, or you could try one of the Unix tools for OS X packages, such as
the Fink.
Or just wait until I upload a snapshot.
