I don't have Debian, and the SDL packaging is different on Fedora anyway
- no need for libsdl1.xxx-arts, so I've never had that either. Also I
don't run KDE and therefore don't use the ARTS daemon.

Yup, I ran UAE for months without problem, and the (UAE) config hasn't
changed at all.

Lot's of updates, including the kernel (can't remember if SDL was
updated or not).

I'm going to try an X11 build sans SDL now, and see if that makes any
difference.

I strongly suspect prelink. If that is the case then that's the final
straw for prelink - it's coming off this system for good.
