If you don't have it, then I would suspect dmix is not being used by default.
In my set up, the config file for my sound chipset sources the dmix config
file. You said you have libasound 1.0.8. I guess this default behaviour was
added in a successive ALSA release (it's certainly in 1.0.9 here).
