Graduate Student Opportunity:

Dendroclimatology and Dendrogeomorphology

Funding is available to support two graduate students, at the Masters
level, to work on projects within dendroclimatology and
dendrogeomorphology, starting in September 2003. The field location is
the Pinery Provincial Park, on Lake Huron, southern Ontario. This site
supports an Oak Savannah woodland on a coastal dune system, with areas
of currently active and inactive dunes.

(a) The first project concerns the longterm tree-ring record of eastern
white cedar and its potential use in reconstructing past climates and
environmental conditions from this part of southern Ontario. This
research would be conducted through York University under the
supervision of Dr. Katherine McLeod in the Department of Geography.
Students interested in the project can contact Dr. McLeod directly:

(b) The second project concerns the use of tree rings to produce a
longterm record of changes in coastal processes and the dune systems at
this site, dating periods of sand re-mobilization and stabilization.
This research would be conducted through Wilfrid Laurier University
under the supervision of Dr. Mary-Louise Byrne in the Department of
Geography and Environmental Studies. Students interested in this
project should contact Dr. Byrne directly: mbyrne@xxxxxx
