CALL FOR PAPERS

Members of the Faculty of Arts and Science (faculty, visitors, adjuncts,
emeriti, postdocs, grad students, undergrads) may be interested in
submitting manuscripts for consideration in a future expanded edition of
"Landscapes of the Heart" -- one that would cross the boundaries of
ecology, economics, culture, the social sciences, health, law, philosophy
and literature. Individuals already involved include E.O. Wilson, Noam
Chomsky, Maurice Strong, David Cash (Kennedy School of Government,
Harvard), Stephen Schneider (Stanford), Lee Gass (UBC; recent winner of 3M
Award as "Professor of the Year"), and Stephen Kellert (Forestry, Yale).
Background to the existing edition can be found by clicking on the URL
below (see bottom of this email). Guidelines for the new edition are under
development, and will be sent to interested persons later this winter.
Please forward this message to appropriate mailing lists and/or to
interested individuals.

Students are VERY welcome in this project, for I believe they have had
experiences (and thus have a perspective) quite different from that of
previous generations of scholars.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Michael Aleksiuk

The Department of Geography, University of Tennessee Knoxville

is looking for a Master=92s
candidate interested in pursuing a thesis
                      related to broad-scale habitat
condition in the southeastern United
                      State. The successful applicant
will join a team of scientists on a
                      project funded by the United
States Forest Service (USFS) and
                      Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA). As part of the EPA=92s
                      Regional Vulnerability
Assessment (ReVA) program, this team will
                      quantify broad-scale habitat
patterns in the Southeastern United
                      States and assess the
vulnerability of existing habitats to
                      environmental stressors (urban
development, air and water pollution,
                      toxics, fragmentation, and
others). Multi-species habitat
                      assessment
                      will involve regional analyses
that capture broad changes in
                      condition, function, and
composition. The team will then work with
                      other EPA scientists to assess
where high-quality habitats are
                      likely
                      vulnerable to future changes in
landscape condition.=20
