Hi Armando,

Thanks for the reply. Actually, I have a huge Dell Precision Workstation
running Win2000Pro. I have not communicated the problem clearly in my first
message. Modem works fine. When I load ICN, it does not detect the modem.
USR's advice to restart the computer several times does not work. ICN kills
my modem and I have to uninstall ICN and reinstall the modem driver to get
the modem back. All of the USR software is up-to-date.

I have worked with USR tech service for several weeks. They tell me that
their software and hardware are not problematic and I am the only person on
the planet having difficulties!! (They don't actually say that, but they do
not admit to a general problem with their software.) They suggested that
there is that an illusive, ever-changing setting in the registry causing ICN
not to be able to detect the modem. I have asked for some clue as to what
is happening and they say that it is impossible to know. Oh, final USR
suggestion: reload your computer. As I have a disk image, I did that and
ICN loads just fine. Except, upon the first phone call, my computer
crashes, the modem dies, and so does ICN.

I am in a location that does not provide two phone lines, so ICN is very
important to me. That's why I bought the modem in the first place. Any
clues you could provide would be helpful. I am in the computing field, but
I am not knowledeable in communications hardware/software.

Regarding the Winmodem. The modem is an internal PCI in a Micron Millenia
XI 400 Mhz machine with MMX, running Win98SE. I downloaded the Win98 driver
from USR just in case, but I imagine that the driver provided with the modem
is as up-to-date as it gets for Win98. I am plugged directly into the wall
with the connector provided by USR.

The modem works. It connects to the ISP and tries to negotiate, but fails.
I think that some string is not being transmitted or there is a timing
error. Have added 5 comas to the phone number in the dialer to try to
overcome timeout problem.

I have tried to block V.92 and shift back to V.90, but the modem software
won't retain the block that I set. I do not know what AT string USR uses to
force V.90 (s32=??) or if this would help. The ISP said that he has
extended his timeout as far out as possible to accommodate the rash of USR
winmodems that Staples is selling in a blowout sale, but is at wits end in
resolving this problem, which he has acknowledged.

I am ready to switch to a Creative Modem Blaster.

Thanks greatly for your time.
