Would appreciate some prayer. A couple of weeks ago an e-mail from the
church was sent out to update our ministry safety training to work with
kids. The video that was required was disturbing. I know that I am
sheltered, but it wasn't good. I personally believe that it wasn't good for
the general public, but it was horrible for anyone who has ever dealt with
sexual abuse. It spent a lot of time on profiling the abuser and very
little on how to actually prevent the abuser from having time/access to
the kids. Several people had reached out to different elders, but several
had not seen the video and those who had didn't think much of it. I guess
compared to other video it was pretty light. I don't care how it compares;
it was bad. So yesterday at the yearly business meeting when it was brought
up and no elder addressed or warned about the content or offered another
solution, with Brian's support (he watched the video and agreed) I stood up
and said something. I was concerned that people would be blindsided and
hurt unduly. I, personally, have a lot of anger/hurt/confusion in regards
to the elders and honestly to the whole system that seeks to prevent sexual
abuse, but makes no place of safety for the adults who have already been
abused. Do you we all need training? Yes. Do we all need to be exposed to
explicit content? No. You can't tell me that this can't be done with more
care and grace.
Would love your prayer as I, myself, process this whole event, and prayer
that if/when I meet with the elders I would be able to explain myself well
and that maybe they would understand.
