That's a good question. I'm looking into colocation offers at the moment
to create some sort of a business plan, because when you talk to
financially stronger sponsors, they want to hear definite numbers.

At the moment we rent a Quad Core Xeon 3220 (4x2.40GHz) with 8GB RAM,
and it is near its CPU capacity when serving ~400 Mbit/s. In the case of
colocation (and for the sake of the 'business plan'), we should aim for
a dedicated Gbit line, especially since Blutmagie will be shut down
soon. It seems nobody has enough knowledge to know where exactly the
bottlenecks are, if a separate crypto-processor would help or even be
used properly. As you know it also seems to be dependent on the used NIC.

I don't have any problems with used hardware, but old P4 stuff is
unlikely to help much...

Moritz
