I start discord, I can see all the messages that happened while I wasn't
connected, and I can scroll back years and see the messages. IRC never had
that except through bots. Maybe some server versions had custom extensions
to allow it, but none I ever saw (although I have managed to stay away from
irc for over a decade now after spending way too much time on it) And
discord has bots too although quite how capable they are I am not sure
since I haven't looked at them much but they are there.

and btw I'm in a bunch of discord "channels", none of them have any

you can do it without bots.

Exactly. Hence why logging bots were commonly used on some channels.
IRC does not have history that you can access from a normal client on a
normal server. You only see what happened since you connected.

irc has history dudeHuh? Unless you’re connecting through a bouncer such as ZNC, it does
not.
Unless you’re referring to some draft IRCv3 spec that no major network
implements?
