I'm building an entertainment centre in my basement with a bunch of my game systems in it, and the plan is to have my C128 on the level I can type at and the drives up on a shelf - 6-7 feet away. I only have short IEC cables, so was thinking of building my own. I haven't started anything yet.

I've got an IEC cable that is about 10 feet long, and it works fine. Probably not to spec, but it does work. The programmer's reference guide gives timings and levels for the IEC bus, someone could probably take those numbers to derive the maximum allowable cable length .
