The VIC-20 can be modified to output S-video but in its default state it is capable only of putting out composite video and since all modern TVs have composite input, there's no reason you can't connect your VIC-20 to a large, modern TV. I have used my VIC-20 on a preposterously large LCD TV and it's quite the experience.
