I picked up a used Dell computer (Pentium III), desktop, extremley small form factor, cost me about $80.00 from CL Computers (I think that's the name of it) on Horton St. in London. I have it connected to my 40" lcd tv in my living room entertainment center. I use it to run CCS64, MAME, ZSNES and Kega Fusion. It came with 256 megs of ram and runs XP. With a wireless keyboard and mouse it's quite a bit of fun, however, the onboard video card won't output anything higher than 1024x768, and no 16:9 resolutions, so it's pillarboxed on my TV.

I've purchased off ebay 1 gigabyte of SD-Ram (2x512mb) and am looking for a low profile AGP video card (like an early NVidia card, even a 3DFX card would be nice). Nobody seems to carry these.

Makes for a good deal of fun.

I still have an old B & W 12" Citizen TV and surprisingly it still works. I used to use it with my Vic-20 and later C-64 when I had them back in the mid to late 80s.

An HDMI adaptor would be neat. Imagine playing Cosmic Cruncher or Avenger on a 60" Plasma/LCD!! :) lol

I seen on a website recently that "an old black and white" TV is best to use with a vic 20 - very nostalgic. I can remember using one that way.

I imagine on a 1702 the video would like nice.

Someone should build an HDMI adaptor for the vic 20 lol.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for that tip! You're right on the money - I found a guy in the US that actually makes the cables and sells them for about $12. Not bad! :)

The C64 cable won't work (unless it's for the very oldest C64s which are pretty rare) . The C64 uses an 8-pin video port. The very oldest C64s, and the VIC-20, use a 5-pin cable.

You need a VIC-specific cable. Fortunately they're fairly easy to fabricate and even buy. I ordered one off eBay a couple of years ago that works very well.

You'll plug into the front of the 1701/1702. The back jacks are for the C64 with the 8-pin cable, or the C128 with the same cable. The back jacks effectively support SVideo, and in fact you can buy cables now that convert C64/128 output into a standard SVideo cable for connection to modern televisions.
