BAMONA records for TN butterflies are processed by me, and BAMONA records for TN moths are processed by Jason Roberts. For butterflies you may send photo plus date, site, and name of photographer directly to me or to TN-Butterflies, preferably the latter for all but very rare species, whose locations probably do not need to be broadcast publicly. If you can label your photos according to the guidelines at my website, that is very helpful. My last submission to BAMONA was made in late December. I plan to get another submission ready for end of April 2010 including all county records that have come to me this year as of that time, as well as all records from earlier years that have been sent to me recently. I'd be interested to know how the updating of moth records at BAMONA is going; the last time I counted, there were about 250 moth species listed for TN at BAMONA. This seems way low, based on everything that is being mentioned on TN-Moths. I have been adding ALL reported sightings, not just FOYs of whatever nature, to a master database for this year. I don't think users of this listserv should have to be religious about checking the current FOY list before posting. If you have any qualms about flooding the listserv with possibly unwanted sightings, I strongly encourage you to regularly email any such sightings to me off-list, at: DougLepidoptera@xxxxxxxxxxxxx , even if they seem mundane. Steve Stedman suggested* last November that it might be worthwhile to start keeping records of both first-of-year and also last-of-year observations by county. I agree, and I am doing that. Of course, determining the LOY sightings actually involves keeping track of all sightings for the whole year (because otherwise how do you know which one is last?). I am in the process of trying to automate (or semi-automate) the whole system with a website to help relieve the upcoming bookkeeping burden. We have before us the possibility of capturing an entire season of compiled butterfly data for the whole state. This would be an important baseline for any future efforts. My goal is to set up all of this data to be publicly queryable online. Potential BAMONA records are handled by Steve, not me, although I will forward any stray submissions that come to me. The important thing is that Steve gets the photo and observation details, and that can be accomplished either by private email to him or by posting to the listserv. Personally, I like seeing the details and photos on the listserv. I'm sure Steve will weigh in with any preferences that he has. I presume our first-of-year (FOY) sightings are OUR first sighting for a particular county. Or are you suggesting we check the county lists each time we post to see if someone else has posted for that county? I think that would be too time consuming, and that the records might not be up to date anyway. County records (BAMONA) - I understand we are to include photo(s) at moderate to low resolution, attached to the public post, with all pertinent information, and not send directly to Bruce (or Steve). Correct? I hope we can keep this site user-friendly for all butterfly matters and musings. Thanks Guys! Richard Connors Nashville
