January 19, 2007 Williamson County TN The Williamson County "albino" red-tailed hawk is currently being seen on Hwy. 96 about a mile west of the Natchez Trace Parkway bridge. This bird is not a true albino, having a few dark feathers, but it's a spectacular big white hawk! Apparently partial albino, or leucistic, birds are not as weak as true albinos, because this is obviously a successful bird (in perched photo it's crop appears full and there's blood on the talons). This is at least it's 3rd year in the area (winter resident?). Usually seen near DelRio Pike, it made an appearance in that area for our Nashville Christmas count. About 7 years ago I tried to get close to a white red-tail in Brentwood, also northern Williamson Co, and I know they are not that rare, but I wonder if could be the same bird. I photographed a nesting (with normal mate) female in Rutherford Co. with similar markings about 10 years ago.
