On Friday pm, I heard a prothonotary warbler singing in the woods next to the house. It did not take long to spot him (?) flitting about, searching every place there could possibly be a hole for a potential nest. He even visited a spot on a shed where a clutch of prothonotary eggs hatched in a gourd several years ago, even though the gourd is long gone. One of the alumni of that hatch maybe? Anyway, he eventually found one of the Gilbertson nest boxes in that section of the woods. No sooner had he begun to seriously check it than one of the resident bluebird males divebombed him. The bluebird proceeded to chase the warbler for the next ten minutes. It would not allow the warbler anywhere near the nest boxes, even going into one and staying a while, despite having a brood of his own already. I guess cavity nest sites are so scarce that bluebirds, &, guard them even if they don't need them.
