For those who are still looking for their first hummingbird arrivals, you will enjoy seeing the video clip of hummingbirds swarming to feeders in a yard in Paris, TN, on Friday, April 19th as the cold front was moving through. I was curious about this occurrence since it is spring and asked Mark Armstrong a few questions. He could only speculate, since this is an unusual occurrence. He confirmed that hummingbirds aren't known to flock during migration but emphasizes that this is an unknown factor. Unlike in the fall, when juveniles don't know enough to be cautious, these birds were adults and would be highly motivated to drink in order to overcome fear and land on a person's hand. Hummingbirds are known to remember sites where they have fed in the past so if a lot of birds were moving and cold or rain limited food resources (insects and flowers) a number of birds might converge on a known food sources at once. He also confirmed that hummingbirds can be funny about feeders, and for unknown reasons, will select one group of feeders to use heavily while ignoring identical ones close by. Enjoy seeing the video of Shawna Ellis' daughter Gail with hummers buzzing all around her and Gail's lovely hummingbird drawing inspired by her experience. http://vickiehenderson.blogspot.com/2013/04/swarming-hummingbirds-inspire-art.html Vickie Henderson Knoxville, TN video taken in Paris, TN, April 19th
