I'm writing this week's column on the American woodcock's flight display, and my books and the Internet have so far confused me on the source of the twittering and chirping noises during the flight up, and the flight down. At first, I thought it was all produced by wing feathers, but some source said a combination of vocal chirps and feathers on the way down, all feathers on the way up (or was it the opposite!?) Does anyone have a definitive answer on this and have a minute to clear this up? I stood in my field last night and watched one for half an hour, landing over and over about twenty feet from me, but I couldn't tell, of course, the source of the sounds. That didn't make them any less magical!
