[TN-Bird] snow, hummers and swallows

Not only was I surprised by the snow, but the second I stepped onto my
porch this morning, a hummer rounded the corner. We both stopped, mutually
startled and regarded each other. I swiftly backtracked into the house and
made more sugar solution, having already put one feeder out last Friday
before heading for Easter road trip back to the family farm.

On my trek with the dogs this morning, in a driving snow, we broke out into
a large field known as "the Island", since it was once completely
surrounded by river, swamp and old sloughs. Five barn swallows were
sweeping slow over the dogs, perhaps hoping there would be some insect
either kicked up, or attracted to the canine herd. Later I saw the swallows
do something I hadn't seen before. A low place in the field was studded
with Senecio, a knee high weed with bright yellow blooms. The swallows
brushed thoroughly through these weeds, sometimes almost hovering over the
flower cluster, knocking the snow from the petals. I assume they were
looking for insects, since of course, there were none to be plucked from
the air...
