[TN-Bird] salt for birds

Yesterday was a great day for us watching birds out our studio window. A male
indigo bunting showed up for the first time this season and the deck seemed
like an airport with all the Goldfinches, Pine Siskins, Doves and rest of the
flying critters. We were especially excited to have two brilliant male
Baltimore Orioles visit during our supper on the back porch. They tore into a
tent worm nest high in the Cherry tree and feasted for 15 minutes until a
Cooper's Hawk scattered everyone.
A neighbor suggested we put up a salt block to deter the squirrels from chewing
on our deck so we installed one last year in a little cedar box to keep it from
getting all over the deck. The squirrels love it but the surprise is that the
house finches literally line up waiting for their turn to peck at the salt
block ( a small pet-sized block available in pet stores or Wal-Mart). I also
noticed two doves taking turns yesterday at the block.
