Red Crossbills are heard by me 95% of the time when I am on Unaka Mountain or Roan Mountain. You will hear these birds flying over but seldom see them perched. In the early mournings wait in the Carver's Gap gravel parking lot in your vehicle. Red Crossbills and pine siskins often come down to the gravel to pick up grit or seeds. You may get great looks at them if you are lucky. If you don't see them doing this just spend some hours on the mountain and eventually \you will hear them fly over.
