Hi folks, I haven't gotten out much, but have seen some interesting birds here and there, including: Common Goldeneye - thanks to Warren Bielenberg's email. On the Sewage lagoons at Cades Cove, in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. A bird most of us missed in Blount last year. Common Ravens - 2, again, flying over US 321 out in Walland, doing morning road(kill) patrol. Eastern Meadowlark - several times in the last week I've seen dozens of them. Must be migrating throuh. Cades Cove near John Oliver house had at least 45 yesterday (Saturday). The remnants of the "sparrow field" by the Townsend Post Office has had anywhere from 6 to 50 at different times recently. The field between Heritage Middle and High schools had about 25 on Friday afternoon. They are just everywhere, and singing up a storm. Horned Lark - the pair at Heritage schools, the only 2 I have seen in the county in a while, were there Friday afternoon. Sharp-shinned Hawk - didn't see any since early November, and all of a sudden in the last 3 days I've seen 2 for sure, and likely 3rd. White-crowned Sparrow - still a "tan" bird at our feeders. Red-winged Blackbirds and Common Grackles - increased exponentially all around the county in the last week, including a handful of each at our feeders. American Goldfinch - still HORDES of them around. We fed nearly as much thistle as sunflower seed this week. No siskins at the house in a week, now. Purple Finches - after a peak during the 2 snows, we are back to our typical 6-8 birds. Canada Geese - been seeing and/or hearing flocks headed north over our house for about 10 days. Been seeing individuals or pairs showing up at places they haven't been until now, this winter.
