A little recent digging in the Christmas Bird Count historical database
(address below) indicated to me a fair possibility that the population
density of Eastern Screech-Owls in Tennessee is geographically
differentiated with lower population density in West Tennessee and
higher density in East Tennessee (and moderate density in Middle
Tennessee).

As a quick and dirty set of data to highlight this difference, here are
all-time high counts of EASO for the various CBCs conducted in the three
grand divisions of the state:

West Tennessee

Savannah--11
Reelfoot Lake--6
Memphis--6
Jackson--2
Dresden--2
Paris--1
Fayette County-1

MIddle Tennessee

Nashville--19
Lebanon--19
Duck River Reservoir--16
Clay County--16
Columbia--14
Cookeville--13
White County--12
Buffalo River--10
Ashland City--8
Hickory-Priest--7
DeKalb County--6
Cross Creeks--6
Springfield--3
Warren County--3
Franklin-Coffee County--2
Clarksville--2

East Tennessee

Knoxville--31
Bristol (TN/VA)--25
Shady Valley--17
Nickajack--16
Kingsport--16
Chattanooga--15
Elizabethton--15
Hiwassee--13
Cades Cove--10
GSMNP--10
Roan Mt.--7
Norris--6
Crossville--5
Copper Hill--2
Greeneville--2

This possible difference in overall population density of the Eastern
Screech-Owl across Tennessee is not reflected by Robinson (1990) or
Nicholson (1997), the two most influential books on Tennessee
ornithology published to date. That this possible difference in
population density is not remarked upon by these authors is an
indication of how much that we don't know about the birds of our state
lies buried in a database accessible to all.
