I've also had Osprey far from any sizeable water, a couple of times migrating
high over my hometown of McKenzie. Same goes for other birds normally
associated with water, I once had a group of Forster's Terns migrating overland
in extreme southwestern Henry Co, miles from any decent water at all. You never
know what to expect during migration!

To answer the first question:

> How far do Osprey wander from water?

I see them regularly here at my place in western Lewis County during
migration, sometimes snatching a single fish from our 1 acre pond,
sitting in a nearby snag to eat it, then moving on. We are many
miles from the nearest body of open water of any size; Laurel Hill
Lake is 20 miles, the Tennessee River is 25 miles. Evidently they do
travel overland during migration, snacking from small farm ponds as
they go.

Among others, I've also got Common Loon and Double-crested Cormorant
on the yard list from flyovers. Any bird can show up just about
anywhere during migration.
