After hearing Kevin Calhoon mention how many warblers were around today, I decided to spend the afternoon working on the yard list. Man, I'm glad I did. I had about as much fun as a birder can have in his own yard, and without having to get up out of the lawn chair! Many many birds were passing through, and a number came down to drink or bathe in the pool of water that collects in a shallow depression in the yard. In total, in about 3 hours, I had 52 species, including the following migrants: Barn Swallow Ruby-crowned Kinglet 2 Gray Catbirds Swainson's Thrush 2 Wood Thrushes (counter-singing) Blue-gray Gnatcatcher White-eyed Vireo Yellow-throated Vireo Philadelphia Vireo Red-eyed Vireo 13 species of warblers including: Blue-winged Nashville 2+ Yellow Chestnut-sided Magnolia Yellow-rumped (numerous) Yellow-throated Prairie (a female - somewhat unexpected given the wooded nature of our yard) Palm (3-4 "Western" i.e. subspecies _palmarum_) Blackpoll (at least 2) Black-and-White (at least 2) Ovenbird Kentucky Scarlet Tanager Summer Tanager Rose-breasted Grosbeaks (eating us out of house and home - at one point 3 males and a female were on the tray feeder at the same time) Plus, a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers came noisily through, and I got to watch the bluebird pair busily feeding their babies. What a nice way to spend a Saturday afternoon. I think I'm going to start earlier tomorrow.
