Ed's posting made me smile. I live in a semi-rural area & get to see at least
one turkey, if not many, several times a week. On several recent occasions I
had one INSIDE my fenced yard (which is about an acre). Mind you, the dogs
were only 50 or so feet away on the back porch, fortunately, taking a snooze.
The turkey walked around for awhile, then seemed a little confused about
finding a place in the fence to get thru, then finally flying over into nearby
branches. It even walked around under one of the feeders, pecking around, on
one visit. While I frequently hear them up the hill behind me in the woods,
this is the first year I've ever had such close visitors. I suspect the dogs'
advancing ages play a lucky part for the turkeys! In their younger years, I
think the visit would not have had such a calm ending. Thais Carr, Thompsons
Station
PS My favorite part about having them roost nearby is how noisy all their
wingflapping is when they're getting up in the morning, at quite a late hour
for birds, may I add. Their favorite trees went down in the tornado & I
haven't had either them or the turkey vultures roost here since. I do hope
they decide some of the remaining trees are just as suitable!
