May 26, 2013 about 12:35 pm and again at about 1:30 Paris, Henry County Shortly after arriving home from church this afternoon (about 12:35 or so), I was fixing lunch and my husband and daughter were out in the yard when suddenly our little girl burst into the house yelling, "Kites! Kites! Come quick!" and then she ran back out just as abruptly. She is often the conveyor of exciting bird news betwixt my husband and myself. My husband had just seen a Mississippi Kite flying low over our yard and had sent "the informant" to tell me. When I came out, the kites were more distant but we were excited to see that now there were THREE, two adults (perhaps the two we had seen previously) and a juvenile we had not seen before. We watched them for some time, but I had to come back in to finish the food. After we ate, my husband went back out to continue birding the yard for his "yard day list" and he called me out again to see the same birds. I haven't had a camera on me when they're close enough for a decent photo, but my husband has seen them at very close range right over our yard. He's out there on his days off much more often than I am, since he keeps day lists and notes of what birds are in the yard. This is so exciting for us, much as it was to have unusual winter birds like the large number of Pine Siskins and the Red-breasted Nuthatches which spent the winter as regular feeder visitors.
