Took the dog out at 5:30AM Monday morning (12 Sept) after a brief rain shower and heard a decent flight of Swainson's Thrushes and a few warbler-like calls passing overhead along the ridge. Things were still moving at 7AM but the fog was too think and backlit to see more than warbler-like silhouettes working the treetops. When I left for work shortly after 8AM, things were still moving overhead in the fog, but I noticed they were heading west, across the ridge instead of along it. Heard some warbler-like calls, Swainson's and Wood Thrushes, and 1 DICKCISSEL. This was probably what folks on the Carolinas listserv call a corrective migration... birds moving during the early daylight hours in a non-north/south direction to correct for drifting off their intended course during the night... perhaps pushed east as that bit of rain passed through.
