Today (Sunday, 15 April 2007) was the first day that it has actually felt and sounded like spring at our house (west Knox County)... at least in terms of birds. A respectable 40 species on the day including the first decent number of warblers and vireos and first tanagers of the season. All were actively feeding on caterpillars among the dead leaves. I'm not sure how long the caterpillars will last both because of lack of new leaves to eat and because green caterpillars on brown leaves kinda stand out. The birds seemed to be finding plenty to eat. Highlights: -- White-eyed, Blue-headed and Yellow-throated Vireos -- American Redstart, Myrtle, Yellow-throated, Pine, and Black- throated Green Warblers -- Scarlet Tanager (a pair) -- Wood Thrush -- Blue-gray Gnatcatcher -- Ruby-crowned Kinglet -- Chipping Sparrow, 10+ The Chipping Sparrows and several White-throated Sparrows, N Cardinals, and Am Goldfinches were joining the others in the caterpillar feast.
