This morning, on a long straight stretch of road (east Madison County,
Beech Bluff Road), far ahead of me I could see a kingbird harassing other
birds severely, and swooping dangerously near vehicles. As I passed the
spot, I saw the dead body of a bird on the pavement, and the living bird
perched on a fence nearby. I turned around and went back and removed the
dead body, a young kingbird still limp and wet with blood. I feared the
adult would continue to guard it and risk being hit as well, so I laid in
on the edge of the field just under the fence.

I just realized that I have not seen (or heard) ANY nighthawks this year.
Have I just been unlucky? Has anyone else noticed a lack of them this
summer?
