friday (10/8) was the last time I saw any resident hummers at the feeders but
today my long time purple finch stopped by to check out his nest. last spring
my husband removed all the english ivy from our front porch which resulted in
also removing the purple finch nest they'd used for years. that fall the
finches returned to their winter sheltered nest on our porch and pitifully
searched and searched for the nest to no avail. they finally gave up looking
for it in about january. in spring they returned to find their nest still
missing so I asked my hubby to put a board in the corner so they would perhaps
build there. well, they sure tried but in the absence of a "nest architect
consultant" they were totally unsuccessful after many attempts (and my
returning their twig pieces to the corner board over and over). finally I
glued a small piece of wood to the front of the triangle board and low and
behold they managed to build a functional nest and raise 4 chicks. life was
good for them once again. I'm waiting now to see when he'll bring his mate to
the nest for this winter's shelter. it is great fun watching "my" purple
finches.
