Cumberland County will be the focus of a foray effort 29 May-4 June 2010, to include the Memorial Day week-end. This effort to survey all "blocks" (i.e., areas that are one-sixth of a USGS quadrangle) in the county to determine the status of their breeding birds will follow up on breeding bird atlas work done 1986-1991, as well as follow up on a TOS foray (results of which were never made public, but which would still be welcome if they still exist) conducted in the county during 1985. Ed LeGrand and I will coordinate this foray. There are 75 blocks in Cumberland County, so we're planning to take a week to get them all covered and would be glad to have help from birders both inside and outside the county. Contact me for block assignments and Ed for local information if interested in helping out. Excellent ear-birding skills are essential by persons who wish to lead a party surveying a block, but less skill is needed by persons who wish to join a party for a day or two and help by recording birds, spotting birds, and finding nests and other breeding evidence, etc. Some blocks in Cumberland County are quite rugged, so surveying them primarily on foot may be required. There is a page of my website devoted to the foray protocol and many pages devoted to results of forays conducted in the Upper Cumberland Region in recent years.
