Episcopal School of Knoxville Knox County April 28, 2006 I first reported a Northern Flicker excavating a cavity on 4/4. The students and I observed it for about a week excavating. We then were gone for a 4 day weekend (Easter) and end of the year field trips this past Mon - Wed. All last week neither bird was observed around the nest cavity. The weather was a bit uncooperative and we did not have much time. I was afraid that the birds had abandoned the cavity. However since our return from m.s. trips, we observed birds at the cavity both yesterday and today. Yesterday, at several points in the day, both the male and female were seen together around the cavity openning. The male was pecking/excavating and the female was "hanging out with him." Today we've only seen the male entering and exiting the cavity. At one point this afternoon when several students were observing the nest, a student claimed that she saw the male bring food in to the cavity. I saw him come in and go out within less than a minute. We're hoping that the female is sitting on eggs in there. I'll let you know more as we discover it....
