20 June 2013 Roan Mtn, Carter Co., TN & Mitchell Co., NC If you want to see Red Crossbills, this summer is shaping up to be a good time to look. A decent cone crop is developing on the red spruce & Fraser's fir on Roan Mtn & elsewhere. Crossbills have been reported on Roan & Unaka Mtns, as well as several sites along the Blue Ridge Parkway in western NC. At Roan Mtn one of the best spots to look for crossbills is at Carver's Gap. Watch the gravel portion of the parking area, as crossbills like to pick up grit, especially early in morning before traffic increases. Also watch for flocks flying around. Today on Roan: Red Crossbill - 17+ Pine Siskin - 3 Also of note: Hermit Thrush - 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler - 1 male, singing at same site as 2 wks ago. The other expected spruce-fir species were also seen. Rick Knight Johnson City, TN
