Quite a number of posts to TN-Bird and BirdKy concerned the crane flight yesterday. I can add a few additional notes to what you have probably already surmised, i.e., that yester- day was indeed a peak day in the migration of Sandhills through the Upper Cumberland. Danny Stone is a waterfowl hunter who lives in Celina, Clay Co., TN. Yesterday he counted about 3000 Sandhill Cranes near Celina, all flying north. About 1300 CST he checked a field that lies right on the boundardy between Clay Co., TN, and Monroe Co., KY, and found a large number of Sandhills on the ground. Among these birds were two large white cranes, which he took to be two Whooping Cranes. Judging from those details, which are all I have, and the word of several persons who know Danny's field skills, I would say that there is a very high probability that Danny did, indeed, see Whooping Cranes, probably in both states or at least from both states. Thanks to Terry Campbell for passing the word of Danny's sighting and for making an effort to find these cranes with me and Winston Walden this morning (no luck).
