I received a report of 120+ Sandhill Cranes heading north near Fall
Creek Falls State Resort Park today 1115-1130 CST, so observers living
in a northerly or slightly northwesterly direction from this site might
be on lookout for cranes this afternoon.

Until the end of the 1990s, most southbound cranes stopped being seen by
late December at the latest in the Upper Cumberland Region, and most
northbound cranes started being seen by mid-January at the earliest in
the same Region. Starting in the early 2000s, however, reports of late
southbound cranes began to occur as late as mid-January, while reports
of early northbound cranes began to occur as early as early January,
modest but detectible changes in the migration pattern of this species,
perhaps caused by changing climate conditions along the cranes'
migration route. It even sometimes occurred that the last southbound
cranes would appear AFTER the first northbound birds were noted, a
somewhat noteworthy circumstance.
