Winston Walden and I drove an 82-km long survey route in western Putnam Co. last Friday, repeating a route we surveyed during late May 2004 and late May 2005. We counted 28 CERWs along this route this year, compared to 42 in 2005 and 47 in 2004. The method we use to survey for CERWs is non-standard, but it still gives a rough idea of the local population of CERWs, which may be in decline if the results of our surveys are at all an accurate reflection of the actual status of the birds. Most of the roads we surveyed this year have not undergone much change from the previous two years, indicating that local alterations in habitat probably cannot be assigned as a reason for the apparent decline of this species in this part of the state. Results of the surveys (2004-2006) may be viewed at this page of my website: http://iweb.tntech.edu/sstedman/CERWwestputnamcotn.htm Steve Stedman Cookeville, TN =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
