On Canon gear, if you go to the website, you can search for refurbished cameras which are still warranted but at a decent discount. Likewise, you can google Canon's customer loyalty program, trade in an obsolete camera, and get a decent discount. I too have a small fortune in a Canon 7D with lenses. Need to use it more. I have been researching for several months now. I have tried out both the Canon SX50 HS and the Panasonic FZ200. In short, the Canon has 50X optical zoom versus the 24X of the Panasonic. The Panasonic shoots slightly faster. The Electronic Viewfinder (EVF)is incredible on the Panasonic--1.3 Million dots versus the 202 thousand dots on the Canon. I have been dragging my feet on purchasing one or the the other. During my procrastination another competitor has entered the market at the $500 price point, and subsequently Canon and Panasonic are now lowering their prices (I saw the Canon SX50 HS for new as low as $329.000). Fujifilm has just (two weeks ago?) released the Finepix S1. Here's the short run down. EVF: 920 thousand dots Aperture: f2.8-f5.6 50X optical zoom: 1200mm equivalent 5 axis image stabilization Shoots in RAW and JPEG (Also, there is a option to shoot in both at the same time) and here is the the kicker (for me at least)...It is weatherproof/dust-proof-- it is sealed at 70 different points. One can also shot remotely from an app on a smartphone (great when camera is zoomed in tight and on a tripod). I am still making my decision. With all that said here is a picture of a Bachman's Sparrow ( a lifer for me) I took with my Galaxy S4 while holding it up to a friend's KOWA 883 scope. https://www.dropbox.com/s/oqfylovb0f4irnw/image.jpg Four of us from Chattanooga (Susan Schott, Tommie Rogers, Jefferey Schaarschmidt and myself) ventured to the Piedmont NWR in central Georgia this weekend and were treated with copious warblers along with the Bachman's and four Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers (also a lifer). Good Luck Alice. I will let you know what I decide to purchase.
