Hey folks,
While birding Rankin Bottoms in Cocke Co. and the Walmart Distribution
Center in Greene Co., TN with Wallace Coffey and Larry McDaniel, I saw a few
butterflies and dragonflies, not many, but they were pretty nice ones. I've
listed them below. At Rankin Bottoms it was fun watching the large numbers
of Eastern Kingbirds trying to eat them!
Wallace Coffey, a serious birder (serious, not solemn), reported no
shorebirds of note; but this neophyte shorebirder was thrilled to be a fly on
the wall while he and Larry McDaniel casually compared their observations of
species present. For me, seeing Least and Western Sandpipers side by side,
with relevant details verbally highlighted, was an unparalleled learning
opportunity. Stilt and Pectoral Sandpipers and Greater Yellowlegs may be
among the usual shorebirds, but for a ridgerunner like me no shorebird is
common. Rankin Bottoms is an awesome phenomenon. Thank you, Wallace and
Larry, for doing what you love to do and sharing it with others.

*You really ought to see the Halloween Pennants, there are lots of them
perched on some of the slightly higher stem tips in the emergent vegetation.
They have orange and black banded wings and are quite beautiful.
