Last Friday two visiting birders--David and Laura Crotser from Granger, Indiana--found two Brown-headed Nuthatches on Oby Blevins Rd., Fentress Co., TN. When first found, the nuthatches appeared to be excavating a cavity in the dead stump of a Shortleaf Pine. David and Laura continued to observe these nuthatches over the week-end, and yesterday they discovered a NEST with 4 or 5 eggs in a hole in a fence post near the site where they originally found the birds trying to excavate a cavity. This site features about 30 oldish (12-16 inch) Shortleaf Pines along the road and some additional scattered pines nearby; these pines have a very plentiful cone crop. As far as I know, this observation is the first of BHNU for Fentress Co., TN--although two local residents stopped and talked to the Crotsers, saying that they had had BHNUs at their feeders occasionally in the past. This nest is almost certainly the first for BHNU on the northern Cumberland Plateau of TN, and it may be the northernmost sighting--and nesting--ever in TN. Many thanks to the Crotsers for passing along word of their outstanding find.
