There was a flock of about 20 bobolinks on Boyd's Island this morning in east
Knoxville. The birds were quite distant from the point of observation making a
good count problematic.
Boyd's Island is in the Holston River just north of the confluence with the
French Broad river. UT uses the island for agricultural research and it is not
accessible to the public. Portions of the island can be seen from the Holston
River Park on Holston Hills Rd just south of Boyd's Bridge Pike. Unfortunately
the birds were on the far side (east edge) of the island and not easily seen
from the boat ramp parking area. It is possible that the birds can be seen
from one of the greenway trails that goes up the bluff. Even if visible from
there, the birds would be a half mile or more away and a scope would be
required.

This is the first time we have seen bobolinks on the island. It is generally
planted in corn at this time of year. This year is it planted with a small
grain crop and hay.

Other birds in Holston River Park this morning include prothonatary warbler,
orchard oriole, blue-gray gnatcher, indigo bunting, and common yellowthroat.
