Seven Islands Wildlife Refuge (SIWR)
SE Knox County on the French Broad River
Sunday, June 25, 2006

Hi folks,

Today was another gray day at Seven Islands Wildlife Refuge. We were
concerned about the weather early on, but were lucky enough to have
no rain until we closed. The clouds had the benefit of keeping the
temperature low enough that we decided to stay open the entire 6
hours, rather than close early as we usually do. This was good
because we had 10 birds of 8 species on the last net run!

68 birds of 23 species is good, though neither is a station record.
Either would be a phenomenal day, and even a passing season at many
MAPS stations, including the other one I manage.

Notables today included 8 mimids, of which 6 were hatch-year birds.
Thanks to Mark Armstrong getting his hummer permit last year, the
station banded Ruby-throated Hummingbird for the first time. The
Tree Swallow was a station first; the 2 woodpeckers, Blue Grosbeak
and Eastern Kingbird were seconds.
