The unprecedented incursion of Red-necked Grebes into northeast Tennessee
during this late winter & early spring period continues! Today (4-18) I
observed an immature Red-nk. Grebe at Boone Lake. This is the FIFTH sighting
in the area since Feb. The others occurred as follows:

18-23 Feb (1) Boone Lake
12-19 Mar (1-2) Warrior's Path State Park
15-16 Mar (1) South Holston Lake
5 Apr (1) South Holston Lake

These sightings are part of a larger movement into the Mid-Atlantic & adjacent
inland region (including SW Virginia) this season, mostly in March.

To bring these local sightings into perspective, there have been just ten
previous records in Northeast Tenn. (defined as the 5 northeasternmost
counties), all since 1978. Also, my sighting today is the latest spring record
locally and one of the latest in the state.

Also seen today at Boone L. were 30 Com. Loons (all but one in breeding
plumage).
