Knoxville Knox County East Tennessee While running on the 3rd Creek Greenway in Knoxville yesterday (4/21/09) evening around 6:00 p.m. I saw a single Yellow-crowned Night Heron. It was located between the 2.0 and 2.25 mile markers on the greenway. I saw it first from near the bridge just west of the 2.0 marker (looking upstream), and saw it well enough to distinguish it from Black-crowned by overall gray body and light-colored crown. I could not see it from the greenway as I ran further, so I bush-whacked over to the edge of the creek and was able to see it better from about 50 m away. From there I could see the white on the face bordered above and below by black. Very nice bird! Yellow-crowned Night Herons nested on the 3rd Creek Greenway several years ago (as many as 4 nests if I remember correctly), but I have not heard any reports of them here since then. I did not see any nests near where I saw this bird. [For those not familiar with the mile markers on 3rd creek -- The 0.0 mark is at Neyland Drive. Tyson Park is between 1.0 and 1.25. If you park at the Laurel Church of Christ (3457 Kingston Pike) and walk down to 3rd Creek, you hit the 3rd Creek Greenway at mile marker 2.5. The old Bi-Lo (Earthfare in June) is at mile marker 3.75. ] Chris Welsh Knoxville, TN =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
