At my home in west Knox County I have a bluebird box with 5 young that hatched about a week and a half ago. Yesterday evening I discovered two more active nests that I didn't know about. A House Finch is sitting on a grass nest atop a pillar on my front porch in the space between the top of the pillar and the bottom of my front deck. Last night she flushed when I went out the front door but this morning she sat tight as I walked out to get the newspaper. And on a shelf in my garage in a Carolina Wren nest that I assumed was empty I found 5 or 6 tiny wrens all crowded in on top of each other. In past years I have removed any nests I found there before any eggs were laid as the garage door is kept closed most of the time. Somehow the mother has managed to get into the garage and incubate her eggs. I believe that she uses the openings where the bottom of the electric door doesn't quite meet the driveway; in fact I'm almost sure that's what she uses as a wren that I startled the other night flew down to that area and had exited by the time I walked around the car. This morning when I left for work I left the wrens a slighly larger opening to use. I guess they'll be ok; at least they'll be nice and dry and out of the weather in the garage.
